Scar Revision

Keloids and hypertrophic scars are a result from an over aggressive, partially unregulated healing process of the skin. One of the fundamental building blocks of the skin, collagen, grows too abundantly. The two most common reasons people get keloids or hypertrophic scars are (1) acne pimple on the chest, back or neck and (2) ear piercing. Still, they can form anywhere on the body.

On the other hand, traumatic scars are a result of a traumatic event causing an irregular, atypical contour and color of the skin. Burn or surgical scars are good examples.

Managing scars is challenging, and the treatment options are numerous. Many times the aim of scar treatments is a 50% improvement because of their unregulated tendency to regrow. Treatment options include topical medicines, injections, botulinum toxin, lasers, irradiation, liquid nitrogen, and compression therapy. In the most severe cases, surgery is indicated.
