| Photodynamic therapy is a new treatment that actually dates back to many years ago. It is currently used in medical dermatology for a number of conditions, including the treatment of precancerous growths, superficial skin cancers, and in cosmetic dermatology for the treatment of photodamaged skin and acne. The treatment involves applying a topical photoactivating solution and activating it through light treatments. The solution is selectively absorbed in the areas of treatment. The chemicals created by its interaction with light then attack the areas of concern. There is a sensation of heat during the treatment but the staff will provide a means of relief. Depending on the aggressiveness of the procedure, downtime can range from a few days to a few weeks. A series of two to three treatments is sometimes necessary for optimal results. |
